From Author Brian Fawcett … “We’re all going over the cliff, sooner or later. But isn’t it ironic, since we’re living in an era where everyone can know everything, that most of us don’t actually know a damn thing about the two people who put us here in the first place. Do you know your mom’s favourite vegetable? Do you know your dad’s lucky number? Have you ever asked them if they believe God exists or, ulp, what they think about sex? What they failed at that they should have achieved? Do they think life is worth the toil and trouble? Well, I did, and I was totally surprised by the answers. It was worth it, in all kinds of ways I wouldn’t have imagined. Human Happiness was the result.”

I’m a female, an out-of-date female. That’s because I hold this gender-biased legacy attitude about our national sport. That’s right, hockey. I haven’t come close to a rink, or pair of skates or even a large screen tv blaring Cherry’s chatter since my cute little brother got all gangly in grade 6 and quit the house team (btw, he just turned 40). This trio of writers has brought me back. RANDALL MAGGS is the author of NIGHT WORK: THE SAWCHUK POEMS freshly launched at Hockey Hall of Fame; DAVE BIDINI has just released AROUND THE WORLD IN 57 1/2 GIGS which continues his spiritual riff of finding the familiar in the most unlikely places; its his latest tome in his portfolio of books on music and hockey. PAUL QUARRINGTON has too many awards to mention, and is, this very week, being honoured by the inclusion of KING LEARY in Canada Reads, defended by none other than his buddy in hockey-writing-dedication, Dave Bidini. The BookShort film by Justin Simms – released simultaneously with Randall’s work – is now available with the indomitable help of Kitty Lewis at Brick Books — more at http://www.bookshorts.com/watch_nightwork

Everybody will be going with the lush pink romantic theme this week, so we decided a little antidote was in order! This week’s compilation is all about spooky. While it is also true that romance can be scary, BRETT ALEXANDER SAVOURY’S IN AND DOWN (Brindle & Glass) is a wonderfully surreal take on what constitutes a love affair. MICHELLE GAGNON is a Harlequin Mira author whose TUNNELS will definitely take you places that’ll make your skin crawl – watch for her second thriller coming in April. And SEAN CULLEN does fun-spooky for the kid set – HAMISH X AND THE HOLLOW MOUNTAIN is the third in his most excellent series featuring Hamish the orphan that always escapes.

THE UPSIDE OF DOWN is now available in Canada and the U.S., in the U.K. and in Australia,. Professor THOMAS HOMER-DIXON brings his particular message of hope to the English-speaking world, how each of us can be a hero to the planet. “Just like the spiders and the flies,” says children’s author DOREEN CRONIN, whose bug journal called DIARY OF A FLY illustrated by Harry Bliss underscores Homer-Dixon in a rather humorous manner – “but for them, this planet would not exist!” Which leads to the actors behind the scenes in the BookShort adaption of DOUGLAS COUPLAND’S JPOD (the short film mind, not the series!). This supremely skilled troupe that will have you believing in the super-hero power of, well, doing nothing.

Stunning photos

Award-winning photographer Rafal Gerszak spent a year embedded with the American military in Afghanistan, where he used his camera to document everyday life in the war-torn country. While there, he developed a deep affection for the land and its people, and he later returned on his own. Despite the dangers around him, he continued taking photos, exposing the plight of that besieged country. BEYOND BULLETS: A PHOTO JOURNAL OF AFGHANISTAN (Annick Press) addresses the volatile situation in Afghanistan with sensitivity and profound insight. Rafal’s stunning photos reveal an Afghanistan we rarely see.

Framed by journal entries that relate his experiences, BEYOND BULLETS addresses the volatile situation in Afghanistan with sensitivity and profound insight. Through Gerszak’s lens, readers can see the shattered aftermath of military attacks and dismal hospitals and refugee camps, but they can also experience the vibrant activity of life in the markets, at home and on the Muslim day of rest.

Reviews:

“Gerszak’s images and words are haunting …”
—Quill & Quire, 07/11

“Gerszak’s frank and descriptive observations effectively convey the ugliness, monotony and tragedy of war.”
—Kirkus Reviews, 10/11

“This is a beautiful book, simultaneously heartbreaking and uplifting.”
—wordupnerdup.com, 10/21/11

Death by hanging

Kate Cayley’s new young adult novel, The Hangman in the Mirror (Annick Press), revolves around a dire decree “Françoise Laurent, you are hereby sentenced to death by hanging, which sentence to be carried out in the month of December, in the city of Montreal, in the year of our Lord 1751. May God have mercy upon your soul.”

But all Françoise wanted when she stole her lady’s gloves was to have something of her own, to relieve her desparate poverty. But now there is only one thing that can save her: a woman may be spared the gallows if she marries the hangman. Is she cunning enough to escape certain death? Find out more about this fascinating tale based on a true event in the colony of New France.
